Color Frequencies
A downloadable tool for Windows
This is a tool that uses the same frequency ratios of musical notes in order to obtain a collection of harmonious colors. It generates a simple abstract image of squares, circles or triangles, and applies colors randomly. However the intensity of red, blue and green are distributed across an "octave" and will, according to my hypothesis, form a harmonious blend that will be pleasing to the eye, in the same way musical notes are pleasing to the ear.
As of June 21st 2022, the game has been updated to include many different options.
- Music Generation - Instead of just generating the colors associated with musical frequencies, the game will actually generate the songs built from those frequencies
- Shader Effects - These randomized effects serve two goals. First, they change the look an feel of the image generated. Second they will add or change a musical instrument track for the song playing
- Parameters Menu - This menu can be toggled on and off. It allows some manual control over what the game presents both visually and audibly.
This project began as an offshoot of my procedural games Star Explorers and Anomalies. After making music generation tools for both those games, I began to wonder whether the pleasing frequencies produced by musical notes could also be applied to color.
