A downloadable game for Windows

Cyclopean is an old school dungeon crawler with cosmic horror elements that takes place in the legendary Vaults of Zinn, referenced in H.P. Lovecrafts story "The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath".  It is being made for the Dungeon Crawler Jam 2024. #dcjam2024

Before I forget, you can learn more about the game's ambient music, provided by the lovely and talented Immorpher, on his Bandcamp page here:

UPDATE: 03/30/2024

Version 0.0.3a was completed on the third day.  This one adds a lot of new features.  First, there is a new story and slightly new setting.  When you start the game you will be given a short introduction to your character and the situation.

The game now generates a randomized, tile based dungeon to explore.  It should offer a slightly different experience each play-through.  There is a lot of random number generation involved in how things happen so some play-throughs may not be as balanced as others.

New monsters were added and a new ally in the adventure awaits your rescue.

I added two new gameplay features also.  First there is a mouse button panel on the lower right side of the HUD, so you can play entirely with the mouse. Second there is a map on the lower left side, so it should help you to keep your bearings (somewhat) in the twisting catacombs of the Vaults of Zinn (where the story takes place).

I believe this game jam entry is finished.  But let me know what you think, and if you find any bugs.  I was able to fix quite a few bugs today as well, but there is no guarantee that others will not appear.  I hope you enjoy Cyclopean!

UPDATE: 03/29/2024

Version 0.0.2 was completed on the second work day.  It shows player and monster stats, and includes 1 new monster, the "OLD ONE."  Good luck fighting him!

It also introduces experience points and levels which can increase your LIFE and SKILL stats. There are also two possible upgrades, the sword upgrade and the armor upgrade.  The sword increases your damage and the armor increases your defense. Version 0.0.2 also introduces the treasure chest and gold.  They don't do much yet, but gold will add to your score, which leads me to the final new feature.  The game will give you a report at the end, and let you know how you scored.  Things like monsters killed, gold collected, etc... And on the main screen, you can view up to 10 previous reports to relive those tender moments in Cyclopean.

UPDATE: 03/28/2024

Version 0.0.1 was completed in one work day.  It does include some assets and code scraped from my own previous projects.

To play:

  • Use WASD to navigate, walking into things to attack or pick up/open
  • Space Bar to wait a turn
  • You can also use the arrows and wait button at the lower right corner
  • Find the exit of the Vaults of Zinn to win
  • Rescue cats and find gold to increase your score
  • If your health goes below 0 you will lose
  • You can adjust the window resolution with F10
  • Whatever you do don't press F11

Much of the game menu is non-functional right now.  There is no saving or loading, but game reports are now stored and can be reviewed later.

Features:

  • Easy Controls
  • Scary Monsters
  • 3 Different Meows

This looks great. Especially the green- and- black palette (ancient memories re-surfacing). Are more updates planned, or is the project done

Thanks for the positive feedback!  I am planning on doing a full release of this game some time over the summer.  I really like how it simplifies the dungeon crawler experience and I want to see if I can refine and improve on that.  But I am also thinking about a sequel that would be more of a full scale, open world RPG.  So hopefully lots of news coming about this in the future.

Thanks for the rapid response. I’m really enjoying your work (especially Islands of the Caliph) and look forward to playing both the game and it’s sequel 🙂

Edit: Star Explorers is also an absolutely immersive and brilliant game. Great job on that one too. And I love that you’re updating it after such a long time.

This looks like a decent and fun game, the green monochrome screen aspect is cool!

Thanks!  I am exploring the aesthetics of my earliest memories of computers...
